Microsoft has announced significant changes to its popular Xbox Game Pass subscription service that will take effect in the coming months. With a blend of price hikes across several tiers and the introduction of new options, the gaming giant is adapting its approach in response to various market dynamics. These alterations come as part of the company’s continued efforts to cater to its diverse user base while keeping pace with an evolving gaming landscape. Below, we'll explore the specifics of these changes, the motivations behind them, and what gamers can expect going forward.
Starting July 10, Xbox Game Pass for Console will no longer be available to new subscribers, albeit existing members will maintain their membership status under the same conditions, including access to Day One releases and first-party Microsoft exclusives. New subscribers, however, will be shifted to the Xbox Game Pass Standard tier, which is set at $15 per month but lacks the perks such as Day One releases, EA Play, Game Pass for PC, and cloud gaming. This shift marks a significant change as it alters the entry-level offering for new users.
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, the all-inclusive tier, will see its monthly fee rise from $17 to $20. Despite this increase, the array of features—such as Day One releases, access to EA Play, Game Pass for PC, and cloud gaming—remains unchanged. Additionally, Xbox Game Pass Core will experience an annual pricing adjustment from $60 to $75, with its monthly cost remaining steady at $10. The PC Game Pass, known for its broad catalog and real-time access to new releases, will increase from $10 to $12 per month.
These price modifications are set to take effect on September 12. Notably, Xbox Game Pass for Console codes are still redeemable until further notice, allowing current users to stack subscriptions up to 13 months as of September 18. This stacking function won’t impact existing subscription amounts, providing some relief for current subscribers who want to maximize their benefits before the noticed changes fully roll out.
Interestingly, Microsoft has reassured gamers that the upcoming Call of Duty installment, Black Ops 6, will be included in Game Pass upon its release. This move underscores Microsoft's commitment to offering premium content across its tiers. However, it’s important to note that access to this high-profile game on the release day will be available solely to those in the Ultimate tier if they are not already grandfathered in the Console tier.
Microsoft's decision to revamp its Xbox Game Pass subscription tiers and rates stems from a strategic effort to address slowing subscriber growth, particularly on consoles. Industry analysts suggest that this move is designed to encourage current console users to upgrade to the more lucrative Ultimate tier while still attempting to expand its user base among PC and mobile gamers. While the changes may seem daunting for some, they also reflect Microsoft's ongoing commitment to enhancing and diversifying its gaming service offerings.
