On Tuesday, Snapchat unveiled a series of new features powered by AI exclusively for Snapchat+ members. Among these features is the remarkable ability to generate and forward images crafted by AI from written prompts. Snapchat+ members can also enjoy the newly introduced AI extend tool and have the option to use the app's Dream selfie feature in collaboration with their pals.
To dive into the AI-powered image crafting, members can tap the “AI” icon displayed on the right side of the app interface. Here, they'll uncover a range of creative prompts to prompt an AI-generated visual. Alternatively, users can input personalized prompts. After making a selection or providing their own prompt, the app proceeds to generate the visual. Users then have the flexibility to edit, download, and share the creation with others. This feature builds upon the existing capability for members to design AI-generated graphics for their Bitmoji backgrounds and chat wallpapers.
While Snapchat refrained from disclosing the exact model behind the image generation feature, they have conveyed that they are leveraging models from multiple partner agreements.
An update to the Dream feature, Snapchat's generative AI for crafting fantastical self-portraits, now allows for group fun. You can create a fantastical self-representation with a friend, such as transforming yourselves into mermaids and then share the output directly with them or on your story. Members receive a monthly complimentary pack of eight Dreams under the Snapchat+ subscription.
The extended tool is another fresh addition to the toolkit, giving users AI assistance to correct those too-tightly-cropped shots. If you've snapped a picture that's too close to your subject and want a broader view, the extend tool can help. It uses AI to expand the scene and fill in the background to give a more complete image.
Snapchat is currently in the process of rolling out these features, although the availability may differ by region.
The new features reflect Snapchat's ambition to integrate more AI functionalities into its app, enhancing the existing AI experiences it provides. Snapchat users already have the privilege of receiving AI-generated images through the My AI chatbot and have been experimenting with the Dream feature in the past few months.
Snapchat+ was introduced in the summer with a monthly fee of $3.99. The service has already attracted over 7 million subscribers. The platform recently recorded its most profitable month in terms of in-app purchases, surpassing $20 million in net revenue (post-app store deductions) for the first time in November and experiencing significant revenue growth across nearly every country where Snapchat+ is available.
