With recent developments surrounding author Neil Gaiman, various parties are choosing to separate themselves from the creator known for works such as Good Omens and American Gods. These events have prompted a shift in some projects linked to him.
Amazon Prime Video has opted to alter their approach for the third season of Good Omens, transforming it into a single extended episode instead of a full season, and the release date remains uncertain. Now, Netflix has decided to follow a similar path regarding one of its adaptations.
It has been formally declared that the live-action series of The Sandman will conclude after its second season. This information came from showrunner Allan Heinberg, who expressed gratitude towards Netflix for its support. Heinberg stated that the series had always been concentrated on the narrative of Dream. In 2022, after assessing the remaining source material from the comics, it became clear there was enough content for only one additional season. The goal was to stay true to the original works and to provide enjoyment to both devoted enthusiasts of the graphic novels and supporters of the show.
While the reasoning presented by Heinberg suggests this conclusion was anticipated, it is notable that the graphic novels encompass around eleven volumes. The initial season primarily covered content from just the first two volumes. Despite the existence of other characters and narratives within the series, there remains a wealth of material that raises questions about the choice to conclude the adaptation at this juncture.
Netflix has officially announced that the follow-up season of The Sandman is set to be released this year, although the specific timing remains unannounced.
